Local culture and art

The region surrounding Chithrakoota is a vibrant tapestry of culture and art, deeply rooted in tradition and celebrated through various forms of expression.

Yakshagana, a traditional theatre form blending dance, music, dialogue, and elaborate costumes, thrives here. Yakshagana puppetry, a unique art where small wooden puppets enact Yakshagana stories, is also practiced in the region. Kundapura is known for its skilled artisans who create intricate wooden carvings, pottery, and other handicrafts.

Kambala is a thrilling buffalo race held in paddy fields filled with slush and water. Pairs of buffaloes compete on parallel tracks, each pair attached to a plough. The team that crosses the finish line first wins. The rich folklore also includes the energetic Tiger Dance, mostly performed by teams during the festival of Dasara. Folk dances like the tiger dance and other regional forms are integral to local festivals and celebrations, accompanied by vibrant folk music.

Alongside these artistic expressions, spiritual practices like temple rituals and spirit worship such as the awe-inspiring naga mandala and dakke-bali reflect the region's deep connection to nature and divine spirits. These artistic traditions and various religious festivals form an essential part of Kundapura's cultural identity, reflecting a deep connection to tradition and heritage
